Our Mission of the Month for March is the Bessie Green Community Center
In 1979, Ms. Bessie Green made a decision that seemed simple at the time but has impacted thousand of lives in the 30 years since. Bessie donated her fur coat to the pastors of North Reformed Church in Newark, New Jersey. Her instructions were to sell the coat and use the money to assist someone who perhaps could not afford a coat of their own, much less a fur coat. This simple act of generosity has blossomed into an organization taking on Bessie's name that assists several thousand people each year with food, clothing and a variety of other resources and services.
Services provided include a clothing give away 2 days a week, bible studies, grocery bag give-aways, a hot breakfast and lunch every day, Monday thru Friday, and an open church and lunch on Sundays after worship. They serve 40-100 people EVERY WEEKDAY. Most of their kitchen help is people who in the past utilized the service of Bessie Green to feed and clothe themselves. The leaders of the BG foundation feel truly blessed to provide this service to the community.
